Dordrecht is the oldest town of Holland. In 1220 it received city rights from the ruler of Holland. It was strategically build on a junction of rivers. Thanks to the trade through the rivers it became very thriving. For centuries all the coins of Holland were minted in Dordrecht.
Long before that time the vicinity of the 'Wine Harbour' was the place were the first settlers lived. The oldest buildings that still exists dates back to the 13th and 14th century. The most important of them is the 'Big Church' (Onze Lieve Vrouwenkerk) which was never finished. The tower was intended to become twice its height and would have been the highest churchtower of it's time. But Dordrecht was running out of time and money when Amsterdam became the important center of trade in the 16th century, the start of the Golden Age of Holland.
